While you are there, make sure to also pick up a copy of "Chico's Promise" a book written by Vietnam Veteran Mike Monahan. While in Vietnam, Mike was a Scout Dog Handler for the 46th Scout Dog Platoon in Tay Ninh Vietnam. Mike's canine partner, Chico, worked with him from May 1969 to April 1970. Chico became a superhero when he saved Mike's life alerting him to a tripwire hooked to explosives. During their year together on combat patrols, Chico's alerts not only saved Mike's life, but saved the lives of many American soldiers. Sadly, Mike had to leave Chico behind after being restationed. More than 4,300 military dogs were abandoned or euthanized by the end of the Vietnam War. Chico was put down one year after Mike returned home from Vietnam. For 50 years, Mike's feelings for abandoning Chico have weighed heavy on his heart. Recently, Mike decided to tell Chico's story in his new book "Chico's Promise." Chico saved Mike's life. Now, using Chico's story and proceeds from the book, Mike has the opportunity to save the lives of 50,000 dogs in Chico's memory by paying adoption fees at selected no-kill shelters throughout the United States.
