Giving Up an Animal

Relinquishing Your Pet

Give Up PetAlthough our mission is building loving relationships between people and pets, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton recognizes that life circumstances can sometimes break those bonds. If you live in Montgomery County and you find yourself in an emergency situation (financial or otherwise) that forces you to give up your pet, please call us at (937) 268-PETS (7387) to schedule an appointment. We perform temperament evaluations on owned pets that people can no longer keep. The evaluation will help us identify the best option for your animal.

Following a positive temperament evaluation, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton will immediately accept your pet into our adoption program, if space is available at our facility. If space is not available at the time of the evaluation, the animal will be placed on a waiting list. We do not accept dogs older than 6 months old.

Owners will be charged $25* to release a spayed/neutered cat or dog to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. A fee of $50* will be charged for each unspayed/unneutered cat or dog. Litters under 12 weeks of age may be released for a single $50* fee. Fees for pets other than cats or dogs are determined based on the species of the animal.
