As our state begins to slowly reopen, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is also starting to reopen some of our programs. The safety of our staff, our animals and our community continue to be our top priority. This will be a gradual process that will limit interactions and maintain safe social distancing. As of right now, several of our programs are available. Here is what is currently open:
We know many of you are excited to adopt a new pet and we love the enthusiasm. As of right now, we are processing adoptions by appointment only.
How is this Different from Normal Adoptions?
For the safety of our community, our staff and our animals, we must put in place certain guidelines and restrictions. This includes limiting the number of people in our facility at any given time. For this reason, appointments will be scheduled with approved adoption applicants to come and meet the animal they are interested in adopting. Only two people total are permitted to come in for the adoption appointment. This is also a time when we can facilitate a “meet and greet” between one of our adoptable dogs and your owned dogs. The shelter will still be closed to all non-appointments. This means that the public cannot come in and look at animals without an appointment. All of our adoptable animals will be placed onto our website at www.hsdayton.org/adopt so you have access to the animals we have available.
Our staff is working very hard to care for the animals at our shelter and want to help you find your perfect furry friend. Our staff will wear face masks to protect you and your family and we hope you will do the same to protect their health and well being. If you do not have a face mask, we will have disposable masks that we can provide to you upon your arrival for your appointment.
How Does the Process Work?
If you see an animal on our website that you like, fill out an adoption application. You can find an application by clicking on the animal’s information at www.hsdayton.org/adopt and then printing out the application. You can then email your application to email@example.com. If you can’t scan and email in your application, an attached photo of the filled in application will work as well.
To be fair, our adoption counselors review applications in the order they are received. The first application that is approved will be the first permitted to adopt. We do continue to accept and review application in case an approved application falls through.
Once your application is approved, an adoption counselor will reach out to you to schedule a time for you to meet with the animal that you are interested in adopting. In some cases, we receive multiple applications for one animal, so please be patient with us as we navigate through this appointment process. Our goal is always to help as many people find their perfect match as possible and we appreciate all of your understanding and patience as we move forward.
MeowZa Cat Boutique
We reopened the MeowZa Cat Boutique inside the Dayton Mall on May 19th. We will have limited hours of Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 to 7pm and Sundays from 12 to 6pm. All customers are strongly recommended to wear a mask inside the store. Our store is run primarily by amazing volunteers who are there to keep you safe while finding animals homes. They will all be wearing a mask and we hope out of courtesy to them and to add another level of protection for everyone there, you will wear one as well. If you do not have a mask, we will have disposable masks available for you. If you feel strongly about not wearing one, then we ask that you come back at a later time or we can work with you to review you application online to help limit your time in the store. Our store is not huge and to maintain proper social distancing we are limiting the number of people inside the store to 10 at a time. We recommend that you limit the number of people you bring with you when adopting. This allows more people into the store to meet our amazing cats. Our staff and volunteers will continually be sanitizing all surfaces in the store and we will alter our layout slightly to maintain safe social distancing for our customers.
Community Cat Initiative
On May 5th, we reopened our Community Cat Program. As warm weather is upon us, so is Kitten Season (the time of year when cats breed and an influx of kittens come into shelters). We now have staff on site to begin spaying and neutering these community cats again. Surgeries are done by appointment only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Cats must be unowned community cats and must be brought to us in a humane trap. If you need to rent a trap, we will have curbside trap rentals available starting next week between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The community cats will be dropped off in their traps for surgery curbside between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. It is important for all trappers to stay in their cars and call our curbside number for a staff member to come out and assist you. Pick-up for the community cats once they are spayed or neutered will be between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. curbside at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. For everyone’s safety, volunteers and the general public will not be allowed into the shelter yet.

Currently, we are available to help if you must surrender an animal. We are accepting cats and rabbits at this time. To surrender an animal you must call (937) 268-PETS (7387) to schedule a time to bring in your animals. The whole process is done by curbside and you will not be permitted into the building. Intake is done by appointment only. There is a fee for surrendering an animal as well.
Cruelty & Neglect Investigations
Throughout this entire shutdown, our Cruelty and Neglect Department continued to protect the animals in our community. If you witness any sort of abuse or neglect to any type of animal please report it by calling 855-PETS-911 or fill out a report online at www.hsdayton.org/report.
We miss so much seeing all of the wonderful volunteers that make the Humane Society of Greater Dayton such a special place. You can welcome animals into your home while they grow strong and big and then once they are old enough we will place them into our Adoption Program.
