Giving up an animal

Parting With a Loved One

We’re here to build loving relationships between people and pets. But we know that life circumstances sometimes leave you with no good choices.

If you live in Montgomery County and you find yourself in a situation that forces you to give up your pet, please call us at (937) 268-PETS (7387). Schedule an appointment to bring in your pet. We’ll perform a temperament evaluation that will help us identify the best option for your animal.

After a positive temperament evaluation, we accept your pet into our program if space is available. If space is not available at the time of the evaluation, the animal will be placed on a waiting list.

We do not accept dogs older than 6 months old.

Owners will be charged $25* to release a spayed/neutered dog or any cat to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. A fee of $50* will be charged for each unspayed/unneutered dog. Litters under 12 weeks of age may be released for $10 per puppy or kitten. Fees for pets other than cats or dogs are determined based on the species of the animal.

* Financial considerations apply.
