We thought a fresh start would help Theodore find We thought a fresh start would help Theodore find his forever home. But watching him still be overlooked breaks our hearts.💔

Theo came to us from @montgomerycountyarc after becoming a long-term resident there. We hoped a new shelter would help him shine, but he’s falling into the same routine: waiting, being overlooked, and trying to cope.

He’s about 6 years old, but don’t let that fool you, he’s playful, goofy, and full of love. He knows sit and lay down, loves toys, and snorts like a little piggie when he gets excited. Hot dogs instantly make him your favorite friend. And when it’s time to relax, he’s all snuggles and heart-melting kisses.

Kennel life is hard on Theo. He’s barked so much from stress that he’s lost his voice. Most days you’ll find him curled in blankets, tired, quiet, and hoping someone notices him.

Theo would do best as the only dog in the home. He needs a calm, loving space to decompress, play, and just be himself.

You could change his world. Foster or adopt him today. Even a night, a weekend, or a week can make a huge difference.

🐾 124 Years of Paws-ibilities! 🐾 Today marks an i 🐾 124 Years of Paws-ibilities! 🐾

Today marks an incredible milestone: 124 years of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton! Since our doors first opened on January 9, 1902, our mission to protect the animals of the Miami Valley has been powered by your compassion. Because of your generosity, we have grown from a small organization into a dedicated leader for animal welfare.

Throughout our long history, your support has allowed us to be there when our community needed us most. From serving as a vital refuge during the historic 1974 tornado to providing hope during countless other local crises and rescues, you have ensured we remain a beacon of safety for those who cannot speak for themselves. Your commitment gave us the strength to operate as a no-kill facility, maintaining an incredible 98-99% save rate for our animals.

You have helped us expand far beyond a traditional shelter by opening a low-cost Dayton Humane Veterinary hospital in 2021, launching our Healthier at Home mobile vet unit in 2024, and opening Dayton Humane & Co. Resale Boutique in 2025. Just this past year, your kindness fueled a record-breaking 2,915 adoptions and provided over 224,000 hours of foster care. From our humble beginnings to the high-quality care we provide today, every life saved over the last 124 years happened because of you. Thank you for being the heart of our mission!

Help us kick off our 125th year! Whether you donate, volunteer, or adopt, you are making Dayton a better place for pets and people alike. visit hsdayton.org/get-involved to learn how you can make a lasting impact today.

Maui is a beautiful 7-year-old girl looking for he Maui is a beautiful 7-year-old girl looking for her forever home and she is truly something special. She is gentle, calm, confident, and very loving, with the most adorable ladylike personality. Maui is the kind of cat who bonds closely with her people and makes an excellent snuggle buddy. 💕

Her favorite activities include watching birds from the window, relaxing on a tall cat tree, exploring the house, rolling in catnip, and curling up with you for cuddle time. Maui can be a little picky about her cat friends, but she has had kitty companions she enjoyed in the past.

A huge thank you to @dayton247now for their continued support of all the animals at our shelter, including sweet Maui, as they wait for their forever homes. Your support helps animals like Maui get the love and exposure they deserve. 🐾💙

We're Heading to the Puppy Bowl!! We’re thrilled We're Heading to the Puppy Bowl!!

We’re thrilled to share that Derby and Summer, two rescue pups from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, will represent our community in this year’s #PuppyBowl on Sunday, February 8 at 2P ET | 11A PT.

These sibling terrier mixes started life with uncertainty after being found abandoned alongside their littermates. Thanks to a Good Samaritan, a lifesaving shelter partnership, and the support of foster care, all six puppies were given the chance to grow, thrive, and ultimately find loving forever homes. Now, Derby and Summer’s journey comes full circle as their stars shine bright on center stage.

Summer will compete on Team Fluff, while her brother Derby takes the field on Team Ruff, helping highlight the importance of adoption and supporting humane societies and rescue groups nationwide.

We couldn’t be prouder to represent Dayton and Ohio on such a big stage for the fourth year in a row. Tune in, cheer loud, and celebrate the power of second chances with us.

HSGD Family we need your help!! Please share Bret' HSGD Family we need your help!! Please share Bret's info below! He is our longest resident at the shelter and we want him to ring in the new year with a new home!!

Meet Bret. He is a shelter legend, professional people-lover and full-time goofball.

Bret has officially earned the title of longest resident, and honestly, we’re still confused how this guy hasn’t been scooped up yet. Named in memory of a cherished Humane Society supporter, Bret is carrying on that legacy by spreading joy to every human he meets.

Strangers? Not a thing. Bret believes everyone is his friend and greets them with full-body enthusiasm. He’s convinced he’s a lap dog, will flop dramatically for belly rubs, and takes his role as Chief Snuggle Officer very seriously.

When he’s not charming the socks off everyone, Bret is busy being a model student. He’s currently crushing START training through the Dayton Dog Training Club, mastering basic commands and showing off his agility skills. He’s smart, motivated and loves having a job to do.

Bret is looking for a home where he can be the one and only pet and soak up all the attention for himself. No roommates needed — he prefers to be the star of the show and would thrive in a home with a big backyard and plenty of room to run, play and show off his moves.

If you’re searching for a loyal, hilarious, people-obsessed companion who will keep you laughing and never let you feel alone, Bret is ready to take that spot in your life.

He’s waited long enough. Let’s make Bret’s “longest resident” era come to an end. To fill out an application on Bret, visit our website at www.hsdayton.org/adopt.

As the only shelter in our area helping all types of animals, we are honored that you all support our pets and our mission and can't wait to shatter this year's record again in 2026!
