Who we are

Believers in animal dignity, value, and justice.

We’re here for them

We are a no-kill organization and the largest, most-established animal welfare agency to care for all types of animals in the Miami Valley. We want to enhance the pet-human relationship. We investigate animal cruelty, enforce laws, and perform rescues to ensure all animals are valued and free from suffering. The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is a single-entity nonprofit and not affiliated with any other animal organization or humane society on a regional, state or national level. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are solely funded through community efforts including donations from individuals, companies and grants.

Our history

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s mission began in 1902 to promote the principles of humane treatment for all animals. Dayton’s leaders of the day John H. Patterson, Daisy Shaw Greene, Grace A. Greene, and R.G. Corwin provided guidance for the newborn organization. Since then, our devotion to animals and animal lovers has been unconditional.

Public-spirited citizens eventually raised the Humane Society of Greater Dayton into the oldest, most established community advocacy organization in the Miami Valley. We currently serve a population of more than 570,000 in a 462-square mile region and provide services including pet adoptions, spay/neuter and veterinary care, cruelty prevention, humane education, pet therapy and so much more.

We strive to build a community in which all animals are valued and free from suffering and life is enhanced through the relationship between people and pets.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton values loving relationships between animals and people and these relationships are the foundation of our organization. We create these bonds by finding homes for homeless pets and reuniting lost pets with their families. Our organization also provides resources to help strengthen the human-animal bond.

We have two main facilities in the area to serve you as well as more than 10 offsite adoption locations. Our main location on Nicholas Road houses dogs, cats, rabbits and more! The MeowZa Cat Boutique located inside the Dayton Mall is your one-stop shop to adopt cats and get everything you need to care for your furry feline friend!
