💕🐾Lil' Mama isn’t asking for much… just a cozy bed 💕🐾Lil' Mama isn’t asking for much… just a cozy bed fit for a queen, a yard for her daily adventures, and a human who understands that belly rubs are non-negotiable.

This sweet older lady might start off a little shy, but don’t let that fool you. Underneath that nervous exterior is a total lovebug just waiting to shine. She’s not big on head pats (a girl has her boundaries 💅), but give her some good belly rubs and you’ll be her new favorite person in no time.

Her vibe? Slow mornings, peaceful strolls, and lots of lounging with her people. Think “retired and thriving” energy. Lil Mama may get along with other dogs, but she’d love a meet and greet first to make sure everyone passes her very important approval process.

If you’re looking for a low-key best friend with a big heart and an even bigger love for belly rubs, Lil' Mama is your girl!

Ready to make her dreams come true?

Thank you to @dayton247now for helping support shelter animals just like Lil' Mama while they wait for their forever homes 💛

Back in January, during our large cat hoarding cas Back in January, during our large cat hoarding case, there was one tiny life that captured so many hearts… the little opossum found living among the cats in a filthy trap cage. So many of you reached out, asking about her and hoping she was safe.

At the time, we shared that she had been transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator so she could receive the specialized care she needed. After that, we didn’t have many updates, but we never stopped thinking about her either.

Now, we finally have some exciting news!

That little opossum, now named Ophelia, was given the time, specialized care, and space she needed to heal. And this past weekend, she was finally able to be released back into the wild, right where she belongs!

It’s hard to put into words what a moment like this means. From a cramped, dirty cage to the freedom of the outdoors, Ophelia’s journey is a quiet but powerful reminder of why this work matters so much. Every life deserves a chance, no matter how small or unexpected.

Thank you for caring about her. Thank you for asking about her. And thank you for being part of a community that never forgets the ones who need us most.

✨We’re trying something new this week!✨ Over the ✨We’re trying something new this week!✨

Over the past few months, many of you have asked for a better way to know when foster pets will be at the shelter and available for walk-in visits. Normally, meetings with adoptable animals that are in foster homes are by appointment only, but every so often they come into the shelter for short “pop-in” visits at the front desk.

In the past, these visits were spontaneous and same-day, which made it hard for people to plan ahead. So we’re going to test out a weekly schedule so you can know in advance when you might get the chance to meet a foster animal without an appointment.

Here’s who is popping in this week at the front desk:

✨ Chanel: Tuesday, 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
✨ Don Gerald: Wednesday, 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM
✨ Hammy: Thursday, 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM
✨Taco and Chica: This bonded pair of chihuahua mixes are officially back from foster and in the kennels, ready to meet adopters during open hours!

If one of them has been on your mind, this is a great chance to stop in and say hello in person. After their Pop-in times, they'll head back to foster if they aren't adopted.

We’ll be watching how this goes and hope it helps more people connect with available foster animals. If you see someone you're interested in meeting, you can always learn more or start your adoption journey here: hsdayton.org/adopt/dogs

Huge shoutout to @udaytonzta at the University of Huge shoutout to @udaytonzta at the University of Dayton for spending time with us and making a big impact for the animals in our care 💙🐾

From rolling up their sleeves to clean kennels, to helping us transform our open piggie room back into a cozy cat space, this group truly did it all. They even took the time to give some of our pups a much-needed spa day… including sweet Toffee Teefers, who clearly enjoyed the extra attention in the tub 🛁🐶

Your kindness, energy, and willingness to jump in wherever needed does not go unnoticed. Because of you, our animals are more comfortable, our spaces are refreshed, and our team is so grateful.

Thank you for being such an amazing part of our mission!

💔🐾 Valor’s Story, A Cat We Truly Thought We Might 💔🐾 Valor’s Story, A Cat We Truly Thought We Might Lose 🐾💔

Valor came from a TNR community cat colony, where he was living as a neutered outdoor cat as part of a program that helps manage cat overpopulation while allowing cats to live in familiar outdoor environments. But, everything changed when he was found with severe injuries.

When he arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, it was immediately clear his wounds were life threatening. He had a deep wound to his head that went through his skull and into the brain, along with additional injuries. In those first moments, there was real fear that we might not be able to save him.

He was rushed into care for intensive treatment, including pain management, antibiotics, and careful wound care. Infection was a major concern, and every day felt uncertain as we watched and waited for any sign he was still fighting.

Then he began showing neurological symptoms and light sensitivity. That was the moment it truly hit how serious this was. We were no longer just worried, we were bracing ourselves.

And still… he started eating again. That small moment meant everything.

Slowly, his condition began to stabilize. The infection improved, the wounds started to heal, and bit by bit, Valor started to come back to us. After a long road of care, he was able to have a surgical cleaning and closure of his wounds, followed by continued recovery and healing.

And then he kept surprising us. The process was long, but he eventually healed enough to have his sutures removed and became ready for adoption.

Today, Valor is gentle, affectionate, and full of love. He adores head rubs, leans into attention, and rolls around like he knows he is finally safe.

After everything he has been through and with such a sweet, cuddly personality shining through it all, Valor was able to join our adoption program. 💛

They were living in filth and cages they couldn’t They were living in filth and cages they couldn’t escape. In a home without running water, surrounded by waste, fear, and neglect.

Back in January, our team responded to one of the most severe cruelty cases we’ve seen. 33 animals were removed from conditions no living being should ever endure.

Today, most of them are off to loving homes, soft beds, and fresh starts.

But three are still here.
Still waiting.
Still hoping someone sees them.

Meet Snowball ❄️
Snowball has every reason to be shut down… but she isn’t. She’s talkative, expressive, and full of personality. She wants to be seen. She wants your attention. And she’ll happily chat with you about her day if you give her the chance.

She would love to be your one-and-only, soaking up all the love for herself, or she may do okay with a slow, patient introduction to other cats. What she truly wants is a home where she feels safe, heard, and adored.

Meet Baby Bundt 🧁
10 years old and still as cute as ever, Baby Bundt has spent her whole life being small enough to be overlooked. But don’t let her size or age fool you, this tiny girl has plenty of life and love left to give.

She’s sweet, spunky, and so deserving of a quiet, cozy home where she can finally be cherished like she always should have been.

Meet Zinger 🐾
Zinger’s body is still healing, but his heart never broke.

After everything he went through, he is still gentle. Still loving. Still choosing kindness. He leans into attention, eager to connect, eager to trust, eager to learn what it means to be someone’s dog.

He’s food motivated, ready to learn, and just needs someone willing to guide him with patience and love. Everything good in his life is still ahead of him.

If you’ve ever thought about adopting, this is your sign. Help them leave their past behind and step into something beautiful.

Apply to adopt at hsdayton.org/adopt or come meet them in person 💙
