As we celebrate America’s Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, it’s important to remember our furry companions who may find the loud noises and bright lights of the holiday stressful. The following tips from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton can help ensure your pets stay safe and calm during the Fourth of July:
- Create a Safe Space: Prepare a quiet and comfortable area inside your home where your pet can relax and feel secure during fireworks displays. This could be a crate, a designated quiet room, or even under the bed. Provide familiar items such as bedding, toys, and treats to create a sense of comfort. You could even turn on a TV or radio to tune out some of the booms they may here from the fireworks.
- ID and Microchip: Ensure your pet’s identification tags are current and securely fastened to their collar. If your pet is not microchipped, consider getting them microchipped as an extra precaution in case they escape due to firework fright. You can stop by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton at 1661 Nicholas Road and get your pet microchipped for just $20. No appointments are needed.
- Avoid Fireworks: Keep your pets away from fireworks and sparklers. The loud noises and bright lights can be frightening and may cause them to bolt or become disoriented. Never leave pets unattended outdoors during fireworks displays. Although we know you love having them as part of your family, when it comes to fireworks, it is best to keep your furry friends at home.
- Calming Resources: Veterinarians have access to calming chews they can give to your pets if you know they are going to be stressed out on the Fourth of July. It helps calms their nerves and keeps them a little more relaxed. In addition, there are over-the-counter items such as Thundershirts that you can purchase to help your pets. These compression shirts allow your pet to feel safer and calmer during the loud booms of firecrackers.
- Exercise Early: Well before your fireworks festivities, take your pet for a walk or have an extended playtime with them. Helping them to burn additional energy will also keep them less anxious later on. Avoid walking your dog or taking your pets outside during peak fireworks hours.
By following these simple tips, we can all help ensure our pets have a safe and stress-free Fourth of July. Let’s celebrate responsibly and keep our furry friends happy and healthy!
