They may be small enough to fit in your lap, but guinea pigs have personalities big enough to fill your entire home.
In celebration of Guinea Pig Appreciation Day on July 16, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, which has found forever homes for nearly 100 guinea pigs this year, is shining a spotlight on these lovable little companions and sharing a few tips to help new adopters give them the happiest start possible.
Known for their cheerful squeaks (or “wheeks”), curious personalities, and joyful little hops, guinea pigs are much more interactive than many people realize. They recognize familiar voices, eagerly greet their favorite people at mealtime, and each one has a unique personality all its own.
“People are often surprised by just how social and affectionate guinea pigs can be,” said Brian Weltge, President &CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. “They may be one of our smaller adoptable animals, but they have enormous personalities and quickly become cherished members of the family. Seeing nearly 100 guinea pigs find homes through our shelter already this year is a wonderful reminder that these incredible companions deserve to be celebrated.”

Hay All Day!
The secret to a happy, healthy guinea pig starts with unlimited timothy hay. It keeps their digestive system running smoothly and helps wear down their continuously growing teeth. Round out their diet with quality guinea pig pellets, fresh greens, clean water, and a daily source of Vitamin C. Bell peppers are one of the best choices because guinea pigs can’t produce Vitamin C on their own.
Give Them Room to Zoom.
Tiny cages just won’t do. Guinea pigs thrive in spacious enclosures with solid flooring, soft paper-based bedding, cozy hideouts, cardboard tunnels, and safe chew toys. A larger habitat gives them room to explore, play, and feel secure.
Be Their Safe Place.
Moving into a new home is a big adventure. Give your guinea pig time to settle in, speak softly, and handle them gently by supporting both their chest and hindquarters. Before long, they’ll fit right in and most likely be wheeking every time they hear you open the refrigerator door.
Floor Time = Fun Time.
Guinea pigs love supervised adventures outside their enclosure. Create a guinea pig-proofed space free of electrical cords and household hazards where they can safely stretch their legs, explore new surroundings, and show off their adorable popcorn jumps.
Chew, Chew, Chew!
A guinea pig’s teeth never stop growing, so chewing is more than just fun, it’s essential. Safe wooden chews, cardboard tubes, and guinea pig-friendly toys help keep their teeth healthy while providing enrichment.
A Little Pampering Goes a Long Way.
Regular nail trims, routine health checks, and annual visits with an exotic animal veterinarian help keep guinea pigs healthy throughout their lives. Like any pet, preventative care is one of the best gifts you can give them.
Better Together.
Guinea pigs are naturally social animals and often enjoy having a guinea pig friend to share life with. If you’re considering adoption, ask about bringing home a bonded pair or adopting two compatible guinea pigs. Just be sure they are the same sex or already spayed or neutered to prevent unexpected litters. Many guinea pigs thrive with a companion, enjoying everything from napping side by side to chatting with one another throughout the day.
Guinea pigs may not fetch tennis balls or go on neighborhood walks, but they’ll greet you with happy squeaks, entertain you with their playful antics, and quietly become one of the most lovable members of your family.
