If your pet becomes lost or goes missing, many things are running through your head at one time. Who should I call? Where did they go? Are they going to get hurt? Will I ever see them again? One thing you can proactively do before a situation like this occurs is to get your pet microchipped.
Microchipping you pet takes just minutes to do, but the peace of mind it can give you is priceless. The microchip is no bigger than a grain of rice. It is placed just under your pet’s skin between their shoulder blades using a needle and syringe. This microchip contains a unique microchip identification number. If your pet is every lost and brought to a shelter, veterinarian or vet hospital, the first thing they are trained to do is scan your pet for a microchip. Staff can then look up the microchip number and obtain your name and contact information, which can then be used to notify you that your pet has been found.
Unlike collars or identification tags that could break away or fall off of your pet, the microchip stays with your pet. Plus, if you go to your microchip manufacturer’s website, you can update your pet’s microchip information at any time so that the information is up-to-date no matter if you move or change phone numbers. It is one of the safest ways to ensure your pet is reunited with you if they are ever lost.
