Giving Thanks Fur Family: A Pawsitively Perfect Thanksgiving with Your Pets!

By: The Humane Society of Greater Dayton

As we gather around the Thanksgiving table with our human loved ones, let’s not forget our furry companions who bring so much joy to our lives. At the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, we’re here to help you make this holiday a tail-wagging success for your pets. So, grab a cup of ‘paw-spresso’ and let’s dive into some tips to ensure a purr-fectly safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving for your four-legged family members.

Create a Purr-sonal Space

As the house fills with laughter and chatter, our pets may feel a bit overwhelmed. Provide them with a cozy retreat—think of it as their own “den of zen.” Set up a quiet room equipped with their bed, toys, and, of course, a bowl of fresh water. Consider playing some calming tunes to drown out the noise and let your pets recharge in peace.

No Bones About It

While a nibble of turkey is a treat, be cautious about bones! Ensure the turkey is fully cooked and boneless to avoid any upset stomachs or unexpected choking hazards. Let’s not turn Thanksgiving into a bone-afide emergency, so dispose of bones safely, keeping them well out of reach of your pets!

Spice Awareness – Sage Advice

While sage might elevate your stuffing game, it can be a tummy troublemaker for our pets. Essential oils and resins found in spices can upset their stomachs, especially in our feline friends. And watch out for nutmeg – that little spice in your pumpkin pie could spice up a trip to the vet with seizures for your dog!

Dough Not Feed the Temptation

When it comes to raw dough, just say no to your pets. Rising dough in their tummies can lead to a host of issues, from abdominal pain to bloating. If your furball accidentally snatches some dough, contact your vet pronto!

Don’t Overindulge – Paws for Moderation

While the Thanksgiving feast may be a smorgasbord of delights, remind yourself that moderation is key, even for your pets. Share the joy with special pet-friendly treats or stuff your pet’s Kong with turkey, sweet potato, or green beans for a festive and safe snack. This way, they get a taste of the celebration without any tummy turmoil.

ID Your Pets – Tag, You’re It!

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, a scared pet might make a dash for freedom. Ensure your pets are properly identified with tags featuring your contact information. Better yet, consider microchipping as an added layer of protection. If the collar breaks away, your lost furry friend can still find their way back home.

As you gather around the Thanksgiving table, let’s celebrate the true stars of the show – our beloved pets! By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll ensure a day filled with gratitude, joy, and wagging tails. From all of us at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, we wish you and your fur family a Thanksgiving that’s as sweet as a treat-filled Kong and as cozy as a well-loved pet bed. Happy Thanksgiving, pet lovers!
