Caring for People by Caring for Pets

At the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, we know that the bond between people and their pets is powerful. For many families, pets provide comfort, companionship, purpose, and unconditional love. But when life becomes overwhelming, that bond can also become vulnerable.

Our One Health Program recognizes that the health of people, animals, and our community are deeply connected. By addressing both human and animal needs together, we help families stay together, improve overall well-being, and create healthier outcomes for everyone.

What makes our program unique is that we have a licensed social worker on staff who works alongside our animal welfare professionals to provide compassionate, personalized support. This collaborative approach allows us to help individuals and families overcome barriers that may be affecting both their lives and the well-being of their pets.

How We Can Help

Our licensed social worker can connect individuals and families with resources and support related to:

  • Housing instability and pet-friendly housing resources
  • Food insecurity and access to community assistance
  • Mental health and emotional wellness
  • Grief and pet loss support
  • Crisis intervention and emergency planning
  • Hoarding intervention, animal overpopulation in the home or hoarding intervention and prevention and support services
  • Senior adult services and aging-in-place resources
  • Domestic violence resources, including assistance through our Safe Haven Program
  • Connecting clients with healthcare, financial assistance, and other community partners
  • Navigating challenges that may impact the ability to care for a beloved pet

Every family’s situation is different. Our goal is to meet people where they are, listen without judgment, and provide meaningful support that benefits both the individual and their animal companion.

Pets for Life: Bringing Resources Directly Into the Community

Pets for Life is a community outreach initiative that operates under the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s One Health Program. Rather than waiting for people to come to us, Pets for Life brings essential pet care services and human support directly into neighborhoods where access to veterinary care and pet resources may be limited.

Through this proactive approach, we build lasting relationships with residents, helping remove barriers that often prevent families from accessing care for their pets.

Our team believes that every pet deserves quality care and every family deserves access to the resources needed to keep their pets healthy and at home.

Strong Families. Healthier Pets. Better Communities.

Together, the One Health Program and Pets for Life reflect our belief that caring for animals means caring for the people who love them.

When families have access to support, resources, and compassionate care, pets are more likely to remain healthy, stay in loving homes, and avoid entering the shelter system.

Through these innovative programs, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is creating a healthier, more compassionate community—one family, one pet, and one neighborhood at a time.
