Pets for Life: Breaking Down Barriers to Pet Wellness in Dayton
The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is proud to launch Pets for Life, a transformational program designed to expand access to pet wellness for families across our community. Thanks to a competitive three-year national grant from Humane World for Animals’ Pets for Life Mentorship Program, HSGD is leading the way as the only organization in the Miami Valley chosen for this opportunity.
This initiative addresses the real challenges that prevent many pet owners from accessing veterinary care and essential resources—and ensures pets can stay in the loving homes they already have.
Why Pets for Life Matters
Across the country, many pet owners face barriers to care similar to the challenges of accessing healthy food, education, or human healthcare. When support is out of reach, pets and their people suffer.
Pets for Life was created to change that. Built on the belief that every pet deserves a chance—and that love for pets exists in every neighborhood—the program focuses on equity, compassion, and direct support.
Through this initiative, HSGD works to:
-
Keep pets with the families who love them
-
Lower barriers to care before crisis occurs
-
Strengthen the bond between pets and their people
How the Program Works
Pets for Life uses a community-based, hands-on model to reach pet owners who are often excluded from traditional service systems. Our team provides direct, door-to-door outreach, currently serving zip codes 45417 and 45439, offering services including:
-
Free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries
-
Microchipping for lifelong identification
-
Essential pet supplies
-
Personalized education and resources
-
Support that builds trust—not transactions
This relationship-based approach ensures help reaches pets who need it most while empowering pet owners with knowledge, confidence, and long-term support.
What Dayton Residents Can Expect
Through Pets for Life, community members will receive:
-
Personalized, one-on-one support
-
Resources that keep pets safe, healthy, and at home

A Proven Program with National Impact
Since launching nationally, Pets for Life has served more than 275,000 pets in major cities such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia and has partnered with more than 60 organizations nationwide. The program is rooted in the belief that every family—regardless of income, race, or ethnicity—deserves the joy of a healthy relationship with their pet.
By adding Pets for Life to the Miami Valley, HSGD continues to build on the success of its One Health Program and advances a cultural shift in animal welfare—one centered on equity, compassion, and empowering people and pets to thrive together.
