Valor was once a community cat living in a managed TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) colony, where he had safely called the outdoors home. But one day, everything changed. When he arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, our veterinary team was met with one of the most devastating injuries they had ever seen. Although the wound itself seemed small in nature, it was a deep puncture wound that had pierced through his skull and into his brain. He had multiple additional wounds, and in those first heartbreaking moments, we weren’t sure he would survive.
Our team immediately sprang into action—carefully cleaning and flushing his wounds, managing his pain, administering antibiotics, and doing everything possible to prevent a life-threatening infection. Every hour mattered. Every small improvement brought a glimmer of hope.
There were moments when we truly feared we were losing him.
Every Day was a Victory
Not long after arriving, Valor began showing neurological symptoms and became extremely sensitive to light. It was a sobering reminder that this was not simply a surface wound—it was a traumatic brain injury.
Then something incredible happened.
He started eating.
To most people, that may seem like a small milestone. To our veterinary team, it meant everything. It was a sign that Valor still had strength left and was not ready to give up.
Slowly, day by day, his wounds began to scab, the risk of infection became more manageable, and Valor grew brighter, stronger, and more engaged with the people caring for him. After a long stretch of intensive treatment, he was finally stable enough to undergo surgery to thoroughly clean and close the wounds on his head.

Today, if you met Valor, you would never guess the incredible battle he has fought to be here. He greets everyone with gentle head bumps, leans into every chin scratch, and happily rolls over for affection. His sweet, loving personality has captured the hearts of everyone who meets him. The only visible reminder of his past is a small scar on the top of his head.
But beneath that tiny scar lies one final hurdle.
Despite months of healing and the dedicated efforts of our veterinary team, the fractured portion of Valor’s skull has not fully repaired itself. To give him the healthy future he deserves, specialists will perform an advanced bone grafting procedure to repair the defect and complete his remarkable recovery.
Valor’s surgery is scheduled for July 22, and while our team is committed to giving him every opportunity to heal, we can’t do it alone.
