The backpacks are packed, the pencils are sharpene The backpacks are packed, the pencils are sharpened and a brand-new school year is underway—which means it’s the perfect time to sign your child up for Book Buddies! ❤️ Book Buddies is a special, award-winning program at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton that gives children the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to animals in our shelter. And trust us… our pets are the BEST listeners. They never interrupt, never say “that’s not how you pronounce it” and they’re always happy to hear another story! 📖 How does Book Buddies work? Children are matched with a shelter animal and spend time reading to them in a calm, comfortable setting. As your child reads, they’re building valuable skills while helping an animal feel safe, relaxed and connected. It’s a simple activity with a BIG impact. ✨ For kids: • Builds reading confidence and fluency • Encourages a love of reading • Provides a non-judgmental audience • Helps children practice speaking aloud • Creates a meaningful connection with animals 🐾 For shelter pets: • Provides enrichment and mental stimulation • Helps reduce stress and anxiety • Gives animals positive one-on-one attention • Helps them become more comfortable around new people • Makes their time at the shelter a little brighter Whether your child is an enthusiastic reader, working on building confidence or simply really loves animals, Book Buddies is a wonderful way to turn reading time into something meaningful. 📚 This school year, let’s make reading an adventure—for kids AND shelter pets! 💚 MEET THEODORE: PART-TIME DOG, FULL-TIME HAPPINES 💚 MEET THEODORE: PART-TIME DOG, FULL-TIME HAPPINESS MACHINE! 💚 If you’re looking for a reason to smile, meet Theodore! Seriously… LOOK AT THAT FACE! 😍 This 6-year-old happy boy has been waiting 281 days for his perfect person. He came to us from the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center on November 25, 2025, and is now one of our longest residents. How has nobody scooped up this goofy guy yet?! Don’t let the gray on his muzzle fool you—Theodore has SO much life and energy! He loves people, playing tug, toys and, most importantly, hot dogs. 😂 When he gets excited, you might hear his adorable little piggy snorts, and when he crashes for a nap, get ready for some impressively loud snores. 🐷💤 And that SMILE?! It never quits! We’ve dressed Theodore as the Easter Bunny, turned him into one of Santa’s reindeer and put him through all sorts of ridiculous photo opportunities. His response every time? BIG SMILES! 😂 He’s clearly just happy to be included. But Theodore isn’t just a goofy face. He is incredibly eager to please, knows his commands, sits and lies down on the first ask, and comes when called. He’s well behaved in the home, trustworthy when left out and perfectly content to relax nearby without getting into things. He does need one thing: to be your one-and-only. Theodore does not enjoy sharing the spotlight with other dogs or cats, so he needs a home where he can be the only furry king. And with a personality this BIG, he has more than enough love to go around! He’d prefer not to be crated, but give him his people, some room to run and a good game of tug, and Theodore is one VERY happy boy. 281 days is WAY too long for a dog this happy to be waiting. 💔 His smile is ready. His piggy snorts are ready. His tug skills are ready. 315 days. 315 DAYS! That’s how long Zazu has been 315 days. 315 DAYS! That’s how long Zazu has been waiting for his forever person to come along, and frankly, we have some questions. Have you all SEEN this guy?! Zazu is goofy. Zazu is playful. Zazu is ridiculously fun. And Zazu is absolutely, positively obsessed with toys. When we say “toy motivated,” we mean Zazu takes it to a whole new level. You will rarely find him without something in his mouth. A fluffy stuffie? Naturally. A ball? Of course. His favorite metal bowl? YES. This boy will proudly trot around carrying a metal bowl like he just won the World Championship of Bowl Carrying. It is one of his greatest talents, and he takes his job very seriously. But Zazu isn’t just a professional toy collector. He’s also a professional best friend. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be right there with you for everything. Yard time? He’s ready. Adventure? Grab your shoes. Playtime? Obviously. Couch snuggles? He’s your guy. He’s lighthearted, affectionate and bursting with personality, and he has enough goofy energy to keep you laughing for years to come. And because he’s not just a pretty face with excellent bowl-carrying skills, Zazu is also house trained, crate trained and knows sit, paw and down. Basically, he’s got the brains, the charm and the toy obsession. After 315 days, Zazu is ready to retire from shelter life and start his forever career as YOUR best friend. August was a BIG month for finding forever homes! August was a BIG month for finding forever homes! We’re celebrating 272 animals who found their people and started the next chapter of their lives. That includes 204 cats, 55 dogs, 4 fish, 3 guinea pigs, 2 parakeets, 2 rats, 1 rabbit and even 1 bearded dragon! Every adoption represents a heart opened, a home made a little fuller and an animal getting the loving future they deserve.
