Kitten season is still going strong thanks to our Kitten season is still going strong thanks to our warm, dry September — and we’re expecting even more tiny arrivals in the coming weeks. One of the most important things to remember when helping kittens is this: they must be warm before you feed them!

Kittens under four weeks old can’t regulate their own body temperature. If they get too cold, feeding them can actually cause serious health issues — even be life-threatening. Always warm them up first using a safe heat source like a covered heating pad on low, a microwavable heat pad, or a simple “rice sock” made at home.

A kitten’s body temperature should be between 100–102°F. If their paws or ears feel cool, warm them gently before offering food. Together, we can help these little ones survive and thrive!

For more tricks and tips on how to properly warm kittens, check out our website at https://hsdayton.org/2025/10/warmkittens/.

We want to give a huge thank you to Daniel who sur We want to give a huge thank you to Daniel who surprised us today by bringing in a ton of food, treats, toys, and more for the pets at our shelter! We are so grateful for his support. Thank you so much Daniel!!
Our dogs need YOU! Our adult dogs could use a brea Our dogs need YOU! Our adult dogs could use a break from the kennel and that’s where you come in! Fostering an adult dog gives them the chance to relax, socialize, and show their true personality in a loving home. This not only improves their mental well-being, but it also helps our adoption team learn more about their personalities so that we can match them with the perfect forever family.

Fostering is a great option for anyone who wants the joy of having a pet without the long-term commitment of adopting a pet. We provide all the supplies, cover medical needs, and work around your schedule so you can foster as much or as little as you want!

And here’s the best part: when you foster, you’re not just helping one dog, you’re doubling your impact. You give a dog a temporary home and free up a kennel so we can rescue another dog in need.

Ready to make a difference? Fill out a foster application today at www.hsdayton.org/foster and join our foster roster!
